The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities is accepting applications for 2009 Summmer Programs and the 2009-2010 Public Residential High School Year. Interested emerging artists should call 864.282.3706 or email [email protected] to request applications and more information.
Public Residential High School 2009-2010:
The nine-month public residential high school allows rising eleventh graders to finish their last two years of high school (with the exception of dance, for which rising ninth-eleventh graders may apply) while also concentrating in one of five art areas: Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. Total enrollment is limited to 242 students to allow for individualized instruction. In addition to rigorous pre-professional arts training, students receive an intense and innovative academic education that fosters connections to the arts while meeting all the requirements necessary for a South Carolina high school diploma. There is no tuition to attend. There is a meal plan and minimal processing fees, but no accepted student is ever turned away due to an inability to pay these fees.
Summer Programs 2009:
- Academy Summer Program July 5-18, 2009: Intensive two-week training in creative writing, drama, music or visual arts for rising 10th grade students. South Carolina residency is required. Students apply while in the 9th grade.
- Discovery Summer Program July 19 - August 1, 2009: Intensive two-week training in creative writing, drama, music or visual arts for rising 9th grade students. South Carolina residency is required. Students apply while in the 8th grade.
- Summer Dance 2009 July 5-August 1, 2009: Intensive four-week training in ballet and modern dance for rising 7th-12th grade students (students apply in 6th-11th grades, but must be at least 12 years old by June 1, 2009 to attend). South Carolina residency is not required for this program.
The South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities gives the artistically talented high school students from all over the state the opportunity to concentrate on their skills in a supportive environment of artistic and academic excellence. Students apply and audition for the school to concentrate in one of five art areas: Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music or Visual Arts.
The nine-month public residential high school is modeled after a master-apprentice community with an arts faculty who are all practicing artists, as well as educators in their areas of expertise. In addition to rigorous pre-professional arts training, students receive an intense and innovative academic education that fosters connections to the arts while meeting all the requirements necessary for a South Carolina high school diploma.
Life at the school is a constant collaboration. Artists from different backgrounds and all five art areas work together, learn from one another and grow to form bonds that last long past graduation. Located in the heart of the arts district of Greenville, SC, the school's community extends well beyond campus and the Upstate of South Carolina to include parents, legislators, private donors, arts organizations and educators throughout the state.
The mission of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities is to serve artistically gifted high school students of South Carolina through programs of preprofessional instruction in an environment of artistic and academic excellence. The school is a resource for all teachers and students in South Carolina.
