SCDHEC Honors Greenville Physician, Dr. T. Gailey Jr., As Co-Physician Of The Year

Greenville obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Thompson Gailey Jr., and Sumter oncologist/hematologist, Dr. Billy Clowney, have been honored by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control as Physicians of the Year.

DHEC Commissioner C. Earl Hunter recently presented the awards during the S.C. Medical Associations 157th Annual Meeting.

Dr. Thompson Gailey Jr. of Greenville (picture is expected soon) earned the award for his long-time service as director of outpatient services for the Ob-Gyn Residency Program of Greenville Hospital System and mentor to physicians in training. He has gone out of his way to form collaborations with other medical providers in the community to ensure that his patients needs are served, according to his nomination. Dr. Gailey recently worked with DHEC and the community health center to ensure that patients with medical complications of pregnancy are seen in a timely fashion for continued post-partum care. His leadership with the local infant mortality task force and collaboration to provide excellent prenatal care resulted in a reduction of the infant death rate in Greenville County, particularly among African-American babies, the nomination said. At the state level he has served as a strong patient advocate on the Medicaid OB Task Force.

Dr. Billy Clowney of Sumter (pictured at left) was recognized for his work with patients with sickle cell anemia who are transitioning from DHECs Childrens Rehabilitative Services. His nomination was accompanied by a testimonial from a parent whose child with hemophilia he took in as a patient rather than having the child wait up to five hours in the emergency room, and a nurse who had witnessed both his compassion as a physician to others as well as herself. He also serves as director for the local hospice program and is a star attraction at the American Cancer Societys Relay for Life. Dr. Clowney always goes above and beyond what any physician could possibly do, according to his nomination.
