Maybe one in ten Broadway shows will leave you buzzing at the final curtain and for weeks to come. Just such a show opens March 16, at the Peace Center.In the spirit of generationally groundbreaking works like "Hair" and "RENT", "Spring Awakening" is one of the most celebrated shows to appear on Broadway in the past decade. Recognized as Best Musical of the Year by the NY Drama Critics, the Drama Desk, the Outer Critics Circle and the Tony Awards, Spring Awakening is based on a 19th century German play that was banned in its time, and addresses controversial issues that are as current today as they were back then. Coupled with Grammy-winning rock and roll music and lyrics, great directing and a superb cast, Spring Awakening is a significant and wildly enjoyable piece of musical theatre. The story deals with the unheard voices of adolescents as they struggle to define their independence, sexuality and, ultimately, themselves. While the nudity, adult language and themes have been challenging for some, Spring Awakening has successfully brought parents and their children together on these issues, many for the first time. Additionally, in order to encourage conversations about the important issues raised in the show, the Peace Center will be hosting post-show talk-backs with members of the cast after several performances. It is easy to understand why blockbusters like "Phantom of the Opera", "Wicked", "Les Miserable", and "Miss Saigon" have such a broad appeal� they are absolutely terrific.
