Michelin's new $90 million plant in Anderson County is scheduled for completion in late November 2000. The company hopes to have the new equipment installed by early December. The plant will be used for the mixing of natural and synthetic rubber and chemicals to make semi-finished materials used in the manufacture of tires. The plant will not go into actual production until October 1, 2001. At that time, the new plant will employ approximately 100 employees. Michelin will transfer some employees from their nearby sister plants, but the net result will be that approximately 100 new employees will be hired. The South Carolina Employment Commission office, located in Anderson, SC, is assisting with employee recruitment for the plant. The new plant site is located in Starr, SC, on a 750-acre site. Michelin is constructing a 250,000-square-foot facility for the new plant. The walls and roof will be completed by the end of October, followed by the installation of the new equipment. Michelin North America announced plans in August 1999, to invest over $400 million in new plant facilities and creating 400 new jobs. The new Anderson County plant is a part of these expansion plans. Currently, Michelin has 7,370,000 square feet of manufacturing space in the State of South Carolina and employs over 5,000 South Carolinians. Michelin subsidiary, Tire Centers, LLC, recently announced that it is moving its corporate office to Duncan, SC from Akron, Ohio. Tire Centers, LLC is currently building a new office building to accommodate their move. Currently, Michelin has invested over $2 billion in the State of South Carolina since 1975. Michelin executives feel the pro-business environment and skilled work force found in South Carolina are the decisive factors for continuing to make the capital investments in the State of South Carolina. BMW North America and related industries have invested over $1 billion in manufacturing facilities in the Upstate area over the past eight years, creating over 4,700 hundred jobs. Coupled with the $2 billion-plus that Michelin has invested in the Upstate over the past 15 years, the South Carolina Upstate area has become one of the most prosperous and fastest growing manufacturing sectors in the country. . all contents copyright © 1999, greenville.com. contact: [email protected] or 828.253.2880 For listing and advertising information...
