Greenville County Schools Announces Pepsi Golf Tournament Scholarships


Greenville County Schools recently awarded 18, $1,200 Pepsi/Greenville County Schools Golf Tournament scholarships to recipients at a special luncheon. The ninth annual Pepsi/Greenville County Schools Golf Tournament was held last fall at Pebble Creek Country Club to raise funds for the scholarships.

Judges for this year�s scholarship recipients are Dr. LaBarbara Sampson, Elizabeth Cleveland, Carol Cobb, Carol Martin, William Page, and Janie Reid.

Scholarship recipients are listed below with brief profiles:

Siva Nicole Morton � Berea High

Nikki Morton from Berea High School has been accepted to two universities � Lander University and Coker College. While she hasn�t yet decided which school she will attend, she is sure she wants to study sociology and law enforcement. Eventually, she wants to join the FBI. Nikki has earned many awards in the areas of criminal justice, and has been active in basketball, volleyball, tennis, and softball. She currently works at Subway as a shift leader. She is the daughter of Marlene Rogers.

Katie Lynn Poterala - Berea High

Berea High�s Katie Poterala has ambitious goals of earning bachelor�s and master�s degrees after graduation. Katie plans to begin her studies in Art at Winthrop University, and later transfer to East Carolina University for a major in Jewelry/Fine Metals. She is a member of the Beta Club, Key Club, Central Spirit, and is active in her church. Katie is the daughter of Gail and Jay Poterala.

Ashley Gosnell � Blue Ridge High

This fall, Ashley will attend the University of South Carolina to begin working on a degree in biology. She later plans to attend veterinary school at the University of Georgia. Ashley is very active in school activities, including SAT Club, German Club, Marching Band, National Beta Club, Prom Committee, and Student Government. She has earned perfect attendance throughout her high school years. Ashley is the daughter of Phyllis Gosnell.

Hieu Nguyen � Carolina High and Academy

Hieu Nguyen, a senior at Carolina High and Academy, hopes to �change the world so that people can life a better life.� She plans to earn a degree in the medical field from the University of South Carolina, then return to her home country of Vietnam to provide much-needed medical services to the poor. Hieu is a leader in her school and community, achieving academic success while believing in herself. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hai Nguyen.

Patterson Coates � Eastside High

Eastside High School senior Patterson Coates discovered his career choice after volunteering with a sports camp for underprivileged children. He plans to attend Winthrop University to major in sports management and education. Later, with a master�s degree in coaching, Patterson hopes to coach football at the high school or college level. He is active in youth and music programs at church, volunteers for many local charities, and is currently the head coach for a kindergarten basketball team. Patterson is the son of Sam and Lucy Coates.

Julie Elizabeth Dubis � Greenville Sr. High Academy

Julie Dubis will attend Clemson University this fall, with the goal of becoming a nurse or doctor. She has been active on the Greenville High girls varsity soccer team, tutors students several times a week, and holds a part-time job at Schlotzsky�s Deli. She is ranked in the top five percent of her class. Julie is the daughter of Chuck and Kenria Dubis.

Erin C. Mayberry - Greer High

Working with children has long been a passion of Erin Mayberry of Greer High. She organized a guppy swim team for small children, and loves teaching them new skills and watching them grow. This fall, Erin will attend Clemson University to major in psychology. She is active in Beta Club, National Honors Society, the Greer High Swim Team, and serves her church. Erin is the daughter of Susan and David Mayberry.

Carlton Leon Chandler, IV � Hillcrest High

Armed with a business degree from the University of South Carolina, Carlton �Chad� Leon Chandler, IV plans to expand his family�s computer supply business. He has been active in student government, and this year was elected president of the senior class. Chad is sports editor for the school newspaper, and was elected as one of only 14 students to the 2005 Senior Hall of Fame. He is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, InterAct, and serves on the InterHigh Council. Chad is the son of Carlton L. Chandler III and Maria R. Chandler.

Anna Kittel � Hillcrest High

Anna Kittel has a burning desire to become fluent in Spanish so she can serve others in need through a medical career. She will begin her studies this fall at Clemson University, with a major in language and international health and a minor in Spanish. At Hillcrest, Anna is a member of the track and cross country teams, Student Council, and the yearbook staff. She is also an active volunteer at her church. Anna is the daughter of Robert and Terri Kittel.

Marian White � J. L. Mann High Academy

Pursuing a bachelor�s degree in English and a master�s degree in human nutrition at Furman University, Marian White plans to fulfill her dream of becoming a magazine writer. Marian�s activities at J. L. Mann High Academy include National Honor Society, French Club, service learning, Youth in Government, and the girls� Lacrosse team. She serves her community at Project Host Soup Kitchen and through her church. Marian is the daughter of Knox and Marsha White.

Mark Edmonston � Mauldin High

Mark Edmonston, a senior at Mauldin High, is determined to become a news reporter. He plans to attend the University of Georgia, pursuing a degree in Mass Communications, to fulfill his dream. While at Mauldin High, Mark has been honored with the Principal�s Award and has been an Academic Excellence recipient. He is active on the school�s baseball and golf teams, and is involved in church basketball. Mark is the son of Malinda and Eddie Edmonston.

Zachary Joseph Coffman � Riverside High

Zachary Coffman is a varsity letterman in three sports and has served as the co-captain of the wrestling team at Riverside High. He hopes to become a physician, working in the area of cardiology, when he completes his studies at the University of South Carolina. Zach is a member of his church youth group, the National Beta Club, National Honor Society, and volunteers for Meals on Wheels. Zach is the son of Donna Coffman.

Tara T. Lance � Southside High

Tara Lance, a senior in Southside High�s International Baccalaureate program, plans to attend the University of South Carolina to earn a degree in business administration. With a minor in international trading, Tara hopes to own her own business after graduate school. She is a volunteer with the American Red Cross, Young Democrats, and the Key Club. She also works as a telemarker, and is captain of the Varsity Cheerleading squad. Tara is the daughter of Annette Heyward.

Amy E. McConnell � Travelers Rest High

Amy McConnell of Travelers Rest High hopes to pursue a career in nursing, physical therapy, or dentistry at Clemson University this fall. Amy is a member of the National Honors Society, Key Club and editor of the school newspaper. In the community, Amy volunteers at the Humane Society, Heritage Elementary, and serves as a camp counselor for her church. Amy is the daughter of Chris and Kim McConnell.

Shelley A. Styles � Travelers Rest High

Shelley Styles wants to become an educator and plans to attend Furman University to major in education. At Travelers Rest High, Shelley serves as yearbook editor, and a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club. She is also a Book Buddy to a student at Duncan Chapel Elementary, and has spent about 30 hours in a classroom as a Teacher Cadet. She is active in her church�s Acteen group, a young women�s ministry that helps local charities. Shelley is the daughter of Kevin and Elaine Styles. Mary Catherine Watson � Wade Hampton High

Inspired by her mother�s successful teaching career, Catherine Watson has chosen a career that also helps others in the community � nursing. She plans to earn a nursing degree from Clemson University before working in the critical care unit at a local hospital. Eventually, Catherine wishes to become a Certified Nursing Anesthetist. Catherine is very active at Wade Hampton High, including service on Student Council, School Improvement Council, Spirit Club, and the basketball team. She spends her free time volunteering for the Special Olympics, working, and participating on a local swim team. Catherine is the daughter of Lea and Erwin Watson.

Emily Terace Collins � Woodmont High

Emily will major in nursing and minor in Spanish when she attends Lander University this fall. She is especially interested in helping the Hispanic community when language is a barrier to quality health care. Emily is a Junior Scholar, a member of the Beta Club, and was named Best Hustle for JV Softball in her freshman year at Woodmont High. She is serving as a Teacher Cadet this year and volunteers for the Juvenile Diabetes Walk. Emily is the daughter of Pamela and Terry Collins.

Adam Nicholas Kelley � Woodmont High

Adam Kelley plans to major in English and philosophy at North Greenville College this fall. He hopes to someday become a teacher and a writer. Adam is serving this year as a Teacher Cadet, and has worked various part-time jobs throughout high school. Adam is the son of David and Terri Kelley.
