Greenville County Schools Participate in Cool School Challenge

The PTAs at Paris Elementary, Sara Collins Elementary, and Tanglewood Middle took home cash prizes during the Reedy River Runs Fits Cool School Challenge.

The Fits Cool School Challenge, sponsored by the Greenville Track Club during its annual Reedy River Run, awarded Paris Elementary the top award of $1,000 as the school with the highest percentage of registrants - 65% - that registered and participated in the race. Third grader Hagen Hiott took second place overall (566 runners) in the Youth Mile race with a time of 6:31.

Christine Hawkins coordinates Paris Panthers Walking/Running Club, an organization that has been in place for three years and encourages student participation. The students are often coached by the Wade Hampton High Cross Country Team and their coach, Rick Zeller. The encouragement they provide helps students do their best.

Sara Collins Elementary took top award of $1,000 in the Overall Elementary School category for the third straight year, with more than 450 students, staff and parents participating. One Sara Collins Elementary student, Ladale Gambrell, tied for second place overall in the mile race while participating in his wheelchair. This is also the first year that Sara Collins Elementary students with orthopedic disabilities participated in the quarter-mile Fun Run.

In preparation for the race, students kept log sheets of the miles they ran during school hours. They were also encouraged to run at home. The students also completed a school challenge to run at least 10 miles before the race.

Tanglewood Middle won the cash award of $1,000 for having the most participants about 90 - among all participating middle schools. They encouraged the entire school teachers, students, and administrators to participate along with their running club.

Tanglewood Middle has had a running club for about seven years and participates in four or fives races annually. The Wellness Warriors running club promotes running along with nutrition and enjoying a healthy lifestyle.

Many Greenville County elementary and middle schools provide extra physical activity through running or mileage clubs. Teachers and other staff volunteer their time to over see the clubs either before or after school or during lunch. Greenville Track Club has been a major supporter with free resources, training, and volunteers who enhance and encourage student participation.
