Furman University’s Music by the Lake Returns on Thursday


Furman University’s Music by the Lake Summer Concert Series, a tradition in Greenville since 1968, will return Thursday, May 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s amphitheater with a performance by the Lakeside Concert Band. “The Music of Henry Mancini” is the theme of the opening concert with Furman professor Leslie W. Hicken directing the Lakeside Concert Band.

All the concerts in the series are free. Concerts will be held each Thursday at 7:30 p.m. through Aug. 5. Those attending can bring picnic baskets, lawn chairs and beach towels to the amphitheater.

The rain location will be McAlister Auditorium on all concert dates except May 27.

A variety of musical genres will be featured including Big Band, jazz, international, contemporary, marches and orchestral favorites. Two of the dates (June 24 and July 15) include a pre-concert at 7 p.m.

Ensembles and bands performing his summer will include the Matt Olson Jazz Quartet, Carolina Youth Symphony, the Greenville Symphony Jazz Quartet, Greenville Chorale, Greenville Chamber Singers, The Andy Carlson Band, S.C. Suzuki Institute Fiddlers and Greenville Brass Quintet. The Lakeside Concert Band will perform at six of the concerts.

At each concert one member of the audience will receive a picnic basket filled with goodies.

The concerts are made possible by Furman and the Lakeside Concert Endowment Fund and are sponsored by the Bank of Travelers Rest, Publix Super Markets Charities, The Greenville News and greenvilleonline.com and The Woodlands at Furman.
