Mike DeMaine to be Honored by USC at This Weekend's Homecoming Festivities

The College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management will present its Outstanding Sport and Entertainment Management Alumni Award to Mike deMaine during the University of South Carolinas (USC) Homecoming festivities on November 7-8.

This is a very humbling honor, to be recognized by The College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management, said deMaine. Ive been very privileged to take the knowledge and experience that I gained from the University of South Carolina, and turn that into a fulfilling career in a field that I enjoy so much.

DeMaine is the General Manager of the Greenville Drive, South Atlantic League affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. In just three short seasons, Mike has led the Drive in setting new professional baseball attendance records in the Upstate, welcoming Fluor Field at the West Ends one millionth fan, and seeing the stadium named Ballpark of the Year.

Under deMaines guidance, the 2008 season culminated with the Drive being honored with the Club Merit Award in the 16-team South Atlantic League. This prestigious award is voted on by league officials, measuring the organizations all around success and accomplishments.

In addition, deMaines love of the game and vision for providing uniquely satisfying baseball enjoyment to the marketplace has also led to the Drives successful efforts to establish Fluor Field at the West End as the premier venue for the wider family of baseball enthusiasts in the region. He helped the Drive submit the winning proposals to bring the Southern Conference baseball tournament to Greenville in 2009 and the South Atlantic League All-Star Game in 2010.

Mike is also heavily involved in the Upstate community. He is a member of the Leadership Greenville Class 34, serves on the Meals on Wheels of Greenville County Board of Directors, and is active in Mauldin Miracle League and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. In 2007, he was the honorary chairman for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Walk for Life and was recognized as one of Greenville Magazines Best and Brightest.

Even with all of his duties and responsibilities with the Drive and the community of Greenville, deMaine has not lost sight of the fact that it all began on the campus of the University of South Carolina. He remains active in The College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management by speaking to and mentoring current students, as well as hiring interns who wish to gain needed experience in the sports entertainment field.

The college will honor its 2008 recipients of the Outstanding Alumni Awards on November 7 at a ceremony at Rutledge Chapel on USCs historic horseshoe. Following the ceremony recipients and their guests will be attending a luncheon in their honor.

This is a well-deserved recognition for Mike. Not only has he been successful in his career, he continues to be a great supporter of the University, the College and our students. He gives back by presenting at the International Sport Conference, mentoring students, supporting the colleges golf tournament, and attending college career night events, said Tina Weaver, director of Alumni Relations. You just couldnt ask for a more enthusiastic supporter.

The College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management is a world-class teaching and research institution producing management level graduates for the hospitality, restaurant, tourism, retail, sport and entertainment industries.
