Domtar Paper Company Expands SC Operations, Creates 90 New Jobs

The South Carolina Department of Commerce recently announced that Domtar Paper Company is expanding its operations center in Fort Mill. The company will invest one million dollars and create 90 jobs within the year. The new positions include jobs at the executive level as well as positions in planning, IT, and customer service.

Domtar is proud of its presence in South Carolina, said Thomas Howard, Vice President for Government Relations at Domtar Corporation. With a pulp and paper facility in Bennettsville and paper converting sites in Tatum and Rock Hill, Fort Mill is a good location for our Companys operations center. We look forward to a long partnership with the Palmetto State, added Mr. Howard.

In March of 2007, Domtar combined with the fine paper business of Weyerhaeuser to create a pulp and paper company with annual sales of more than $6 billion. This allowed Domtar to grow its paper business and transform the company into the largest integrated manufacturer of uncoated freesheet paper and one of the largest producers of papergrade pulp in North America. Upon completion of the merger the company established its operations center in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Domtar currently employs 200 at this facility.

[This] announcement is another sign that our efforts to strengthen the states economic soil conditions are working to grow existing businesses and create job opportunities in South Carolina. As we compete in the global economy, our ability to attract these types of high-paying jobs will have a positive and long-term impact for the region and our state, said Gov. Mark Sanford.

Domtar is the largest producer of freesheet paper in North America and a world leader in production capacity. The decision to establish and grow their operations in South Carolina is a testament to the states business-friendly climate and quality workforce. Domtars expansion demonstrates their continued commitment to South Carolina and that our state is one in which companies can thrive, said Joe Taylor, Secretary of Commerce.

Domtars decision to reinvest in York County signals our continued progress towards becoming the preferred location in the Charlotte region for new office and corporate headquarters activity. Long considered to be one of the best places to work in Fort Mill, Domtar represents the high-quality of company we work diligently to recruit to York County, said Buddy Motz, Chairman of York County Council.
