It's been more than 12 years since the Clemson University Tiger Band has had new uniforms. But "The Band That Shakes the Southland" shook off its old stripes for new ones for the game opener against Texas A & M.
"It was time for a change," said Mark Spede, director of bands. "It was time to update our look, and the old uniforms were showing some wear." Describing the new uniforms, which cost about $450 each, Spede said, "The new uniform is extremely versatile and distinctively Clemson. There will be no doubt that we are from Clemson University when we wear our new uniforms." For the first time in the band's history, the uniform has all the school colors - purple, white and, of course, orange. "Past uniforms were orange, but the orange was a generic orange. These uniforms are made of fabric specifically dyed 'Clemson Orange'," Spede said. The front of the uniform jacket has two looks. The first option is the West Point style, which pays tribute to the university's rich military heritage. "This option will be worn during the band's pre-game activities, such as when we play in the amphitheater, march to the stadium and the pre-game show," said Spede.
The back of the jacket features a large orange tiger paw outlined in purple, along with a reversible back drape marked "Clemson." The jacket also has the Tiger Band logo on the top of the right sleeve. Purple trousers and an orange shako (hat) with a tiger paw complete the uniform. "The band has worn white pants and black pants in the past. The purple trouser is another first for the band," Spede said. "We hope the fans enjoy our new look just as much as they have enjoyed our music over the past years," Spede said. (Images provided by Clemson University.)
