Greenville Baseball Back in Business with Bombers

Greenville baseball fans will have one more season at Memorial Stadium before the citys new team formerly Columbias Capital City Bombers move into a beautiful, new (and yet to be built) stadium in Greenvilles West End.

The happy news ends a bit of a battle for a new baseball team between Greenville, Mauldin, and Powdersville. Since the announced departure in 2004 of the Greenville Braves after a 21-year stint in town, all three municipalities had pulled together enticing offers, but Greenville and its plan for a downtown stadium ultimately came out on top.

Not only are Greenville baseball fans elated, but the placement of the stadium in the citys popular downtown center is great news for local businesses. As downtown Greenville continues to draw renewed interest from the city and private investors, the additional foot traffic and attention spell success for shops, restaurants, office buildings, music venues, and residential buildings.

The new stadium is scheduled for completion in 2006, and is considered to be the final major piece in downtown Greenvilles remarkable construction boom. The complex will include the stadium, residential units, and retail space. Stadium construction is scheduled to begin later this spring, and is expected to have a final price tag of between $10-$15 million.

Under the proposal, the baseball team will pay for the stadium, and the City of Greenville will donate the land as well as street plantings and development.

Spring practice begins within the next two weeks for pitchers and catchers, with the rest of the team to follow shortly at the teams training camp in Florida.
