Greenville County Museum of Art Offers High Quality Programs and Exhibits.

Greenville County is fortunate to have among its many fine organizations and institutions the Greenville County Museum of Art, the result of a partnership between Greenville County and cultural philanthropists Holly and Arthur Magill. The Magills, who paid for half the cost of the Museum's construction in 1974, also created its endowment in 1992.

It was the Magills that the Greenville County Museum Commission had in mind when they agreed to purchase in their honor Andrew Wyeth's "Hay Ledge" (1957), a major painting in tempera and a cornerstone in the county's already impressive collection of Wyeth's watercolors. The Museum owns a remarkable 24 watercolors by Wyeth, and Wyeth himself refers to the collection as "the most comprehensive collection of my work in any public museum."

But the Greenville County Museum does not stop with Wyeth. Along with many other notable permanent collections, the Museum is home to many traveling exhibits throughout the year, giving local art lovers the opportunity to experience a wide variety of artists in multiple mediums.

An exhibition of the work of veteran realist painter Hubert Shuptrine, organized by the Greenville County Museum itself, will be on display at the Museum January 23 - April 14, 2002, before moving on to the Montgomery (AL) Museum of Fine Arts (May 18 - August 4) and the Hunter Museum in Chattanooga, TN (September 14 - November 24).

"Upstate Artists Invitational: See How We Are," an exhibition of the work of 25 Greenville-area artists who work in sculpture, paint, pottery and printmaking, will be displayed January 23 - March 30, 2002.

A collection entitled "Sidney Edward Dickinson: Alabama Suite" will be on display January 26 - March 30, 2002. Dickinson had a successful career in New York as an artist and portraitist, but this collection focuses on his early years (1918-1919) when he painted in Calhoun, AL.

The abstract expressionist work of contemporary artist Arthur Deshaies remains on display, now through February 10, 2002. Deshaies has retired from his post at Florida State University and now divides his retirement time between Barcelona, Spain, Mexico, and Duncan, SC.

In addition to the numerous exhibits available, the Museum offers a number of art education opportunities to Museum patrons, both children and adults.

The Museum is located on Heritage Green at the intersection of Academy Street and College Street in downtown Greenville. The galleries and museum shop are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10AM-5PM and on Sunday from 1-5PM. The Museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays. There is no admission charge.
