Greenville is a great place to live, but what is it that makes it so great? If someone conducted an informal poll, people would probably respond that the region's beauty and weather, employment opportunities, schools, and recreational activities and facilities contribute greatly to their enjoyment of life in Greenville. High on the list of recreational facilities would have to be the Westside Aquatic Center. Operated by the Greenville County Recreational District, the Westside Aquatic Center is South Carolina's only public eight-lane, 50-meter pool. The imposing indoor facility is open year-round, creating the opportunity for children, teenagers and young adults to become serious swimmers and practice throughout the year. Westside Aquatic Center is home to Team Greenville, a mammoth 275-member competitive swim club, whose members have met with great success locally, regionally and nationally. While athleticism and a strong work ethic remain the most important factors in a successful athletic career, access to a top-end pool certainly figures into the formula. The swim club will host two meets at the Westside Aquatic Center in June. On June 22-23, the club will host the Team Greenville Masters Invitational and South Carolina Masters Long Course State Championships. This meet has been designated as the Dixie Zone Long Course Meters Championships. The following weekend, the swim club will host the 11th annual Team Greenville Long Course Invitational on June 28-30. This meet will serve as the last chance for swimmers to qualify for the State Championship in July.
Summer is a perfect time to get started in a swimming program. The pool is open Monday through Friday, 9 AM-Noon, Monday through Thursday, 1:30-3:30 PM, and Monday through Thursday evenings, 7:30-9 PM. The pool is also open on Saturday from 1-5 PM. Instructional times vary, so interested parties should call for more information. Admission is $3 per person per visit. Passes that include 10 visits are available for $20. Senior citizen and handicapped rates are available at half the public price. There is an additional fee for out of district swimmers. Lifeguards are on duty during pool hours, and the facility is handicapped accessible. Locker rooms and showers are also available to swimmers. Westside Aquatic Center is located at 2700 West Blue Ridge Drive in Greenville. For more information, the center can be reached at 864-295-0032.
