As the summer break comes to an end, the Greenville Police Department is reminding drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic safety rules to ensure a safe and smooth transition for students returning to school.
With the start of the new academic year, it is crucial for drivers to be aware of increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic in school zones.
Traffic congestion often increases near schools due to parents dropping off and picking up their children. Additionally, the prevalence of young students walking or biking can make roads more dangerous.
To mitigate potential risks, the Greenville Police Department advises drivers to follow these essential guidelines:
1. Observe Speed Limits: School zones have reduced speed limits for a reason. Slow down and be prepared to stop at all times, especially during peak hours.
2. Eliminate Distractions: Avoid any distractions that may divert your attention from the road, such as using mobile devices, eating, or grooming.
3. Pay Attention to School Buses: Always stop for school buses that are loading or unloading students. Passing a stopped school bus from either direction on undivided roadways is illegal.
4. Yield to Pedestrians: Be vigilant for students crossing the road or walking on sidewalks. Yield to pedestrians at all crosswalks and follow any directions given by crossing guards.
5. Follow Drop-off/Pick-up Procedures: Familiarize yourself with the school’s designated drop-off and pick-up zones, and adhere to the instructions provided by school staff.
The Greenville Police Department will be increasing patrols and enforcement efforts in school zones to ensure compliance with traffic regulations. Drivers who fail to abide by traffic laws may face fines, penalties, or even criminal charges.
GPD urges all community members to prioritize our children’s safety and exercise caution while driving near schools, to create a safe environment for everyone during this back-to-school season.
