Glenis Redmond Named City of Greenville’s First Poet Laureate

Glenis Redmond is the City of Greenville’s first poet laureate.

The Arts in Public Places Committee chose Redmond for the honorary position aimed at promoting literacy and literature among city residents of all ages; Greenville City Council approved her appointment at its formal meeting on Monday, Sept. 26.

“I’m so excited that our community is supporting poetry on this broad level,” Redmond said. “I’ve been doing this work for 28 years across the country, and it’s wonderful that in my own hometown that I can reach others through this platform.”

She began writing poetry as a student at Woodmont High School and at her church, Bethlehem Baptist. Redmond is a Governor’s Award recipient, the state’s highest award for the arts. Additionally, she is a Kennedy Center teaching artist and a Cave Canem poet.

Redmond will serve a two-year term. She will read poetry and speak at public meetings, public venues, neighborhood and community events and schools throughout the City of Greenville. Redmond will also help usher in the City’s first Youth Poet Laureate.
