Greenville Middle Academy’s Benjamin Sinnett is the recipient of a 2019 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Sennett teaches sixth grade science and is Greenville Middle Academy’s Teacher of the Year and a Greenville County Schools Top 10 Teacher of the Year. The award is given to approximately one hundred teachers nationwide each year. Sinnett practices hands-on learning and believes in trial and error. “Mistakes are encouraged, expected and respected,” he said.
The National Science Foundation recognizes outstanding teachers for their contributions to teaching and learning in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science. Sinnett travelled to Washington D.C. in October to accept the award and engage with other award winners on the future of STEM education.”It is our future,” Sinnett says. “We are a great nation of builders, designers, creators and that is the thing STEM allows us to do. It allows us to explore and build and problem solve.”
Sinnett receives a presidential citation and a $10,000 prize.
