Next week marks the beginning of Women’s Suffrage Month, a month in which we celebrate August 26th as the remarkable anniversary of the long struggle to gain a woman’s right to cast a ballot. Note: That right was initially given only to White women with Black women officially winning the right to vote with the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
The SC State Museum is commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment with its exhibit A Voice of Her Own: South Carolina Women in Politics. The exhibit features objects, images and stories showing the ways South Carolina women engaged with the political history of our state. From tribal women leaders, to the first female Governor of the state, this exhibit shows how women worked to gain a voice of their own.
Because of the pandemic, the Museum’s traffic is limited (see special rules), so South Carolina Women in Leadership has proudly partnered with the South Carolina State Museum in sharing that story and the struggles of women throughout our state’s history who wanted their opinions to count and for their voices to be heard. Join us for nine episodes traveling through South Carolina’s rich history, escorted by exhibit curator Joann Zeise. For those of us staying close to home during a time of coronavirus, this lets all of us enjoy a small sampling of the exhibit.

Did you know that one in six South Carolinians struggles with food insecurity and hunger? People can’t function when they’re hungry and many of our neighbors are unable to afford basic needs like groceries. That’s why Harvest Hope Food Bank is turning hunger into hope. They distribute 33 million pounds of food each year throughout the state which allows 20 million vulnerable people to feed themselves and find stability. YOUR DONATIONS MAKE IT POSSIBLE.

SC Thrive is proud to facilitate the COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program — a program designed to provide emergency rental assistance to South Carolinians facing financial hardships as a result of the Coronavirus crisis — in cooperation with SC Housing.

In an effort to help lessen the outbreak’s economic impacts on state residents, the program will provide emergency assistance to renters affected by shutdowns, closures, layoffs, reduced work hours, or unpaid leave due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Eligible households will receive assistance of up to $1,500 for rent in a one-time, lump-sum payment made directly to property owners or management companies.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? Don’t Waste Durham thanks you VERY much for taking this survey. Your responses are important to understanding whether and how much people are using the takeout “extras” (plastic forks, paper napkins, etc) that restaurants give you with your takeout/delivery. THANK YOU!

Greenwood Soup Kitchen is in dire need of volunteers to feed the hungry daily. Volunteer numbers have dropped sharply during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
“We’re down to three or four people,” said Norm Fawcett, Greenwood Soup Kitchen chairman. “We’re struggling to prepare soup and meals. We’re looking for a dozen or more volunteers, just one morning per week. Volunteers do not have any contact with our guests. We’re doing take-home meals. Our dining room is closed.”
The urgent volunteer need comes after the soup kitchen reopened its doors Aug. 10, to distribute take-home meals outside the United Center for Community Care. The nonprofit closed briefly earlier this month after a volunteer tested positive for COVID-19.
Kitchen and dining facilities have since undergone industrial cleaning and sanitation by a licensed company, Fawcett said.
Meals are distributed outside the dining room’s main entrance. Masks and gloves are required of volunteers preparing meals at this time.

While the UN reported that over 1 million species around the globe are at risk of extinction, the Trump administration responded by proposing rollbacks to the Endangered Species Act. Again and again, they have shown that they value profit over planet. But hope is not lost. Here is something you can do today. When you get any item in the Save the Bees collection, you are supporting LCV’s work to stop the climate crisis and protect endangered species.

Attention SNAP Recipients: Beginning August 5th, EBT cards can be used for online purchases of eligible food items in response to COVID-19. At this time, Walmart and Amazon are the only retailers authorized by USDA to implement online food purchasing in this state, and DSS hopes that other retailers and independent grocers will be added soon to help boost the state’s economy.
Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy. The Legacy of Congressman Lewis and Voting Rights
http://participate.lwv.org/c/10065/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=13972&utm_source=ActionAlert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=080620
On the 55th Anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act, we take this opportunity to think of the work of giants and those before us who have created the foundation on which we stand. As we commemorate this historic day for voting rights, we look back at the legacy of Congressman John Lewis, and his tireless fight and advocacy for voting rights and justice for Black people across the country.
Congressman Lewis presided over the historic House vote in December 2019 for the Voting Rights Advancement Act. To fully honor his legacy would mean to pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act in the Senate and restore protections for voters in a critical election year.
The protections outlined in the Voting Rights Advancement Act will:
- Re-establish preclearance coverage for states and localities with a history and pattern of discrimination in voting
- Provide preclearance nationwide for states and localities with substantial minority populations to enact voting changes that have historically contributed to voter suppression, such as changes in methods of election and cuts in polling locations
- Create greater transparency and public notice for last-minute voting information changes, such as polling location changes and ballot information
