To date Darude remains one of dance music’s most influential stars. At the age of 24 and at the height of the trance boom of the early 00’s Finnish DJ / artist / producer Ville Virtanen created the milestone single ‘Sandstorm’ under his pseudonym Darude. The track went on to become one of the biggest selling dance singles in the history of electronic dance music with global sales of over 3 million units and to date featuring on over 300 compilations worldwide.

What started out as a national release in Darude’s native home of Finland went on to become a worldwide phenomenon taking ‘Sandstorm’ to #1 on the Finnish Dance Chart; a spot that it would dominate for 17 weeks. Released in June 2000 by Neo Records the track would see Darude became the first Finnish artist to reach the Top 3 positions on the UK singles chart. Following this, ’Sandstorm’ went on to go Platinum and become the ‘World’s best selling 12” vinyl’ of 2000. The track attained cult like status and gained strong support from industry heavyweights such as Radio 1’s Pete Tong, Tiësto and Paul van Dyk, as well receiving phenomenal radio support from national stations in over 70 countries. Still swelling in sales today ‘Sandstorm’ achieved Gold status in digital sales in the US in 2010 and re-entered the UK Top 40 Dance Chart in 2011, whilst finding new supporters in the likes of Calvin Harris, Zane Lowe and Laidback Luke.

The success of his first three singles (‘Sandstorm’, ‘Out of Control’ and ‘Feel the Beat’) led to the release of Darude’s debut artist album, ‘Before the Storm’. The album would go on to go double Platinum in Finland and Gold in Canada. Worldwide sales to date are over 1 million units. The album was supported by a gruelling 9 month worldwide tour taking in Europe, Australasia and Asia. In the spring of 2002 he followed up this world tour by embarking on a 7 week live show tour across North America – a daring project but one that paid off, solidifying his name throughout the North America club scene.

In 2003 Darude released his 2nd artist album ‘Rush’. The first two singles from the album titled ‘Music’ and ‘Next to You’ went on to conquer the #1 position on various charts across Europe. In 2006, after several years on the road, Darude went back into the studio to work on his 3rd artist album, aptly titled, ‘Label This!’. Released in the fall of 2007 in Scandinavia, fall 2008 in USA and then globally in spring 2009, the album was a melting pot of the modern sound of Darude; progressive euphoric trance, fusing elements of house and rock.

His resume of accolades is a testament to the exponential growth of his profile as an international artist. Over the years he’s appeared on TV channels such as BBC, NBC, CNN and MTV, as well as having won a number of prestigious awards such as 2 x German Dance Awards (2000), Dance Star Award (2001), USA Golden Turntable DJ Award (2002), and is a 3 x Finnish Grammy Award winner. His name has also appeared in numerous public-voted polls with previous entries in DJ Magazines Top 100 DJ Poll (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 & 2009) and BPM Magazine’s Americas Favourite DJ (2004, 2005 & 2006).

With appearances globally across radio and TV, the sound of Darude has also been featured in Hollywood movies such as ‘Under The Skin’ featuring Scarlett Johansson, ‘Ballistic’, ‘Filth’, ‘Like Mike’ and the Jim Carey hit film ‘Fun With Dick and Jane’, Nike, Playstation games and popular sports broadcasts like the America’s NFL, Ice Hockey World Championships, Wimbledon, Ultimate Fighting Championship (used by former heavyweight champion Wanderlei Silva), Euro 2000 and 2006 Winter Olympics. In 2010 his seminal single ‘Sandstorm’ found itself included in the globally popular computer game series DJ Hero, alongside other iconic club tracks such as Josh Wink’s ‘Higher State of Consciousness’.

Hailed by the likes of DJ Magazine as “Finland’s biggest musical export”, Darude has gone on to perform in front of audiences up to 100,000 people strong, sweeping across continents and rocking clubs the world over. From appearing at prestigious festivals and events such as Tomorrowland (Belgium), LA Music Festival (US), Radio 1’s One Big Sunday (UK), Utopia Music (Australia), Laserpoint (Finland), Groove Cruise (US) to headlining some of the world’s best clubs including Ministry of Sound (London), Spundae (Hollywood), Rain (Las Vegas) and Government (Toronto).

December 2010 saw Darude and, co-owner Randy Boyer announce the inception of their new electronic dance music label, EnMass Music. To be used as a platform for their own material, Darude and Randy also wanted to use the imprint as a channel to nurture new music from other emerging artists of whom they believe in musically. To date the label has amassed support from named spinners such as Markus Schulz, Gareth Emery and Judge Jules.

Since the launch of the label Darude has unveiled new compilation series – Salmiakki Sessions. The first release in the series was back in 2011 and is a solid reflection of his namesake radio mix show ‘Salmiakki Sessions’ which has been broadcasting bi-weekly to fans around the globe since 2005. More recently he has been working on completing his 4th artist album with a view to a release date in 2015. This new project will see Darude deliver an album of both song-led and club focused records, including the emotive and trancey sounds he’s become so synonymous with. The first single from the album will be ‘Beautiful Alien’ due early 2015.

So 15 years on from ‘Sandstorm’ and with three artist albums, one compilation, numerous awards and multiple world tours under his belt, as well as a sizzling record label to focus on, Darude’s presence in the world of electronic music remains an ever prolific one, which continually sees him pushing the boundaries and igniting audiences around the globe.

Hustle Souls at Rainer’s Cafe
Jan 25 @ 9:00 pm – Jan 26 @ 12:00 am
Rainer's Cafe & Bar

In the budding music-mecca of Asheville, NC, a man with a trumpet, a guitar and a mission metamorphosed into the groove-centric but emotionally driven soul/rock band, Hustle Souls. With years of relentless touring under their belt, sold out shows and major festival appearances, the band’s infectious modern meets vintage sound has earned them a reputation as one of the East Coast’s most promising acts. After releasing a live video series in 2017, the band was approached by gold and platinum mixer and producer Eric “Mixerman” Sarafin (Ben Harper, Pharcyde etc.) about making a record. In February 2018 Hustle Souls released their debut full-length album “Color” to a sold out crowd and are currently touring from Atlanta to Boston in support of the 10 song LP.

Gabe Dixon at Radio Room
Jan 31 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm
The Radio Room

Gabe Dixon released his sophomore solo album, Turns To Gold, on April 8th, 2016. Produced by Paul Moak (Mat Kearney, Third Day), engineered by Devin Vaughan (Marc Broussard), and mastered by Brad Blackwood at Euphonics Mastering (Allison Krauss &;Union Station, Luther Dickinson), the LP marks Gabe’s first official collection as an independent artist. Following the release of 2011’s One Spark, the Nashville-based troubadour changed almost everything. He was focused on starting from scratch, and parted ways with his longtime management and record label, Concord Music Group. The one thing that didn’t change was that honest, heartfelt approach to songwriting that countless fans fell in love with when he first emerged in 1999.

Throughout his career, many other notable artists have taken note of and supported Gabe’s immense talents. He’s opened for and toured with the likes of Loggins & Messina, Gavin DeGraw and Delta Rae, as well as held side gigs as the keyboardist and vocalist for Paul McCartney, Alison Krause & Union Station, O.A.R. and Supertramp. His songs have received placements on major television shows including
Parks and Recreation, Grey’s Anatomy, and Vampire Diaries, and his song “Find My Way” served as the title for the box office hit The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock. Fans have seen him perform twice on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!, as well as The Late Late
Show with Craig Ferguson, and on festival stages everywhere from Bonnaroo to High Sierra Music Festival. However, it’s with Turns To Gold that listeners will hear Gabe Dixon as he always meant.

Napoleon, It’s Revolutionary – Winter Chautauqua
Feb 1 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Greenville Chautauqua

NAPOLEON, IT’S REVOLUTIONARY
Greenville Chautauqua’s Winter Festival

No military figure in history has been quite as polarizing as Napoleon Bonaparte. Was he a monster, driven by an endless, ruinous quest for military glory? Or a social and political visionary brought down by petty, reactionary kings of Europe?

The French Revolution had taken a dark turn when a 23-year-old Corsican second lieutenant arrived in Paris and saw Louis XVI dethroned. By 30 he was head of the most powerful country in Europe. At his death at 52 in exile, Europe had been changed forever.

One of the first truly modern politicians, he fashioned himself as a hero who successfully dragged France back from the edge of the abyss. Master of media manipulation, this idealized image of Napoleon has endured to this day.

Napoleon’s complex and violent legacy seeded totalitarian regimes in the 20th century and sounds an alert to us in the 21st.

Napoleon portrayed by Mark Schneider
Mark Schneider tours nationally as Napoleon and has appeared in films as well as performing more “American” historical figures in Colonial Williamsburg. Here in Greenville, for one weekend only you can see him as Napoleon. History comes alive as “The Little Corporal” takes the stage and reflects on his life, his military strategies, his social prowess and more. Then following his performance, you get to ask him the questions you’ve always wanted to ask!

Sugarcane Jane at Winter Skunk Music Festival – Greer, SC
Feb 8 @ 8:30 pm – 9:45 pm
The Spinning Jenny

Friday, February 8
7:00 PM – Edward David Anderson
8:30 PM – Sugarcane Jane
10:00 PM – Caleb Caudle

Sugarcane Jane, the Alabama Gulf Coast-based husband and wife duo has amassed an extremely loyal following. Anthony and Savana Lee Crawford purvey what they proudly call “Organic Music at its Finest.” Rich, homegrown, and natural, their brand of Americana draws from a deep well of roots influences, interwoven with inflections of gospel, country, folk, and rock. Listeners can expect mostly acoustic sounds, and some of the freshest-sounding vocal harmonies they will ever hear. Both virtuosos in their own right, Anthony is a songwriter who plays acoustic guitar, harmonica, and a bass drum (which he plays while strumming his six-string) and Savana Lee deftly dances between ukelele bass and snare drum.
Multi-instrumentalist Anthony Crawford is known in most circles as a sideman to the stars. Over the course of the last 25 years, he has performed with Neil Young, Sonny James, Steve Winwood, Dwight Yoakam,Vince Gill, Rosanne Cash, and Rodney Crowell, and has written / co-written songs recorded by Steve Winwood, Dwight Yoakam, Kenny Rogers, Pegi Young, Lee Greenwood, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, to name a few.Yet, even with his history of working with heavyweights, Crawford feels Sugarcane Jane – his musical venture with multi- instrumentalist wife Savana Lee Crawford, is his life’s calling.
Sugarcane Jane newest studio album, Southern State of Mind – an album they conceived and co-produced with legendary Americana/Roots singer-songwriter Buzz Cason is some of their finest work to date. The album is set to be released via Cason’s ArenA Recordings / eOne Entertainment on October 19, 2018. Recorded at Crawford’s Admiral Bean Studio, and mixed at Buzz Cason’s Creative Workshop in Nashville, this fast-paced, high- energy album traverses a range of moods and stories.
“Light hearted and feel good tunes, much like our Dirt Road’s End album.” says Anthony. “Once again, the harmonies take center stage yet classic timeless lyrics and melodies are not far behind.”

1. Our event will take place at The Spinning Jenny, a large indoor music listening room. As much as we love having kids enjoy our fests at the SkunkFarm, we will not be able to provide entertainment and activities for the kids at WinterSkunk. We recommend only older teens attend, and ONLY if accompanied by their folks.

2. The Spinning Jenny has chairs, but you’re welcome to bring your festival-type (foldable bag) chairs.

3. Also, we will not be able to allow outside food and drinks. Food trucks will be on-site, and we’re planning on having another Upstate Brewery Tap Takeover.
