 Background
The ASCE SC Upstate Branch has been hosting the Popsicle Bridge Competition since 2009. The event was started by the Upstate Branch members and the Greenville County Challenge Program teachers.  The Challenge program includes students that achieve high scores on academic testing, and this competition was created to help them learn more about math, science, and engineering in a fun and practical way.  The students spend approximately 3 months in the classroom learning about bridge design and the challenges of creating a strong, yet lightweight bridge which is essential in today’s real world scenarios of cost efficient design.  The 4th grade students construct their bridges with Popsicle sticks and white craft glue and must adhere to certain constraints regarding height, length and width.  The bridges are then brought to the competition for final weigh-in and testing as part of the competition.

Typical Agenda
7:45am – Volunteer arrival and registration
8:00am – Final setup and preparation
9:00am – Testing Group 1 Begins

10:30am – Testing Group 2 Begins
Awards will be presented via video the week following the event.

The 2022 event tested over 300 bridges from more than 800 students.

Bridges are judged by a panel of judges and winners are chosen for the following categories:

1.    Best Architectural Design
2.    Most Original Design
3.    Best Craftsmanship
4.    Best Structural

The “Best Structural” category is based on load testing the bridges to failure while taking into consideration the weight of the bridge.

Brown Skin, Black Ink: A Celebration of Writing
Mar 11 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Chapman Cultural Center

In celebration of Women’s History month, we are bringing together Spartanburg-area Black teen girls between the ages of 12-18 years old in a workshop aimed at amplifying their voices through creative writing and the joy of reading. Participating teens will have a chance to network and dialogue with local Black women writers as well.

During the workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in creative writing exercises, crafting stories and poems of their very own. More than anything, this will be a time to come together to celebrate writing and reading as a source of power, healing, and constant creative inspiration in the lives of Black women and girls. Participants will be encouraged to start or continue their own writing practices.

Come join us and celebrate Black women and girls who share a deep love for writing and reading!

Lunch will be served. Space is limited and registration is required.

This event is hosted by Brenda Lee, author of South of Main, Writer and Editor Desiree S. Evans, visual artist and documentary filmmaker Sarah E. Nixon, and visual artist and Wofford College professor Jessica Scott-Felder. Crystal Tennille Irby, award-winning spoken-word poet and founder of Writers Well Youth Fellowship, will be leading an interactive workshop.

*

If you’re a Black teen girl or the parent/guardian/teacher/representative of one, please use this form to reserve a free ticket.

For parents and guardians, please be aware the workshop ends at 2:00pm and we need to be out of the community center by that time. Please have someone there to pick up the girls before the end of the workshop. Thank you!

Works by Warhol
Mar 11 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Upstate History Museum

“The idea is not to live forever; it is to create something that will.”

Andy Warhol

One of the 20th century’s best-known artists, Andy Warhol (1928-1987) made his name in the early 1960s with paintings and prints of brand celebrities and foods ranging from Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor to Coca-Cola and Campbell’s Soup.  These brash, innovative works are considered icons of Pop Art, a movement that both critiqued and celebrated postwar American consumer culture.  By the end of the decade, Warhol had become a celebrity in his own right, equally famous for his platinum wig and the star-studded parties he threw in his studio, the Factory, as he was for his paintings, drawings, sculpture, and films.

Before spearheading the Pop Art movement, in the 1950s Warhol achieved success on Madison Avenue as one of New York’s most popular advertising artists.  A skilled and inventive illustrator, Warhol won several Art Director’s Club awards for his work on Columbia records LP cover designs, I. Miller shoe drawings, and additional advertising work for Martini & Rossi, Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue magazines.

Once his Pop art career exploded in 1962, Warhol focused on silkscreen painting and filmmaking.  He based his paintings on imagery he found in the American mass media: news photos, celebrity head shots, film stills, comics, logos, and advertisements. To convert his source images into paintings, Warhol made them into photo silkscreens and printed them on canvas.  Smudges, misalignments, and inconsistencies were accepted, giving the paintings a handmade appearance.  Sometimes the paintings included a single image, as in John Wayne (1986) and the Endangered Species series (1983).  These became larger-than-life iconic portraits, while those printed in grids, suggested the way that repetition can simultaneously embed an image in one’s memory and deaden its effect.

Works by Warhol, at the Upcountry History Museum, on loan from The Cochran Collection, LaGrange, GA, will feature 36 iconic masterworks by Warhol, dating from 1968 through his last series done in 1986. This once-in-a- lifetime exhibition includes a broad cross-section of examples from Warhol’s storied career.

The exhibit explores Warhol’s responses to major moments in U.S. history, including the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Neil Armstrong’s moon landing, and the perception of Native Americans in the aftermath of the bicentennial of the United States. Also included is Warhol’s entire series of “Myths”.  This body of work was completed in 1981 and showcases Warhol’s lifetime fascination with Hollywood imagery.  “Myths” marks a return to Warhol’s formative encounters with figures such as Howdy Doody, the Wicked Witch of the West, Superman, Mickey Mouse and many more.

The world of textiles is vast. Every day, we touch dozens of types of fabrics, from our car interiors, to our office chairs, our couches, and our own clothing. Through construction, deconstruction, and exaggeration, these artists explore textiles as a departure point to reach new levels of understanding of fabric, garments, and our relationships with them.

For more information, contact our Associate Curator, Ashleigh Shuler, by email at [email protected] or call 864.582.7616 x 254.

If the weather is nice, I’ll try to grab an outdoor picnic table. Please keep your RSVP up to date so I know what size table to find. I’ll post in the event chat where I grab a table.

I’m pretty sure that this venue doesn’t have food, but sometimes they have food trucks. You can check their website and Facebook page for more info.

Southernside Brewing Co

Details

Let’s kick off riding season with a bang on March 11th for the first Bikes and Beers ride in 2023. We’ll start at SouthernSide brewery and ride the swamp rabbit trail into TR for a stop at Swamp Rabbit Brewery. After refreshments, we’ll head back to SouthernSide and grab some food.

HEADS UP: This ride is starting a little later than usual since it may be cooler in the morning. We’ll meet by the bike racks at SouthernSide at 11:30am and be on the trail around 11:45am.

We are a casual riding group so riders of all skill levels are welcome. The total round trip distance is about 15-16 miles but the trail is mostly flat with just a slight rise in elevation on the way into TR.

I will be taking pre-orders for Official Bikes and Beers T-Shirts for anyone interested. Once we reach 25 shirts, we’ll place the order. There is also an option for a one-off order that is a little more expensive but you don’t have to wait.
