Wofford College’s Dr. Anne Rodrick will be reading and signing her book, The History of Great Britain, on Thursday, February 21, at 7pm at the bookshop. Join us for an evening of wine, cheese, and history!
This updated and expanded volume serves as an introduction to the history of Great Britain, from prehistory to the present. Guiding the reader through complex developments in politics, economics, culture, and empire, this book helps readers to understand how the four kingdoms of England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland have come together and split apart over centuries of change.
Chronologically arranged chapters will help readers to better understand British history as it includes pre-Roman Britain, Britain’s Tudors, the Reformation, and World Wars I and II, in addition to current events such as Brexit and others for which Theresa May has been prime minister. A timeline, a glossary, and an appendix of significant individuals in the history of Great Britain help to round out the text. The strong narrative line allows readers to understand the ways in which Great Britain has both responded to and guided global changes in economics and class, gender and race, and the politics of expansionism and nativism.
Anne Rodrick has taught at Wofford since 2000. In 2006, she was honored with the second annual Philip Covington Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Humanities and Social Sciences. She has written two books, one a compact history of Britain and the other a book about civic culture in 19th-century Birmingham, England. Her current research interests involve the ideas of identity in the Victorian city.

Greenville audiences are in for a special treat when two of the UK’s most recognized proponents of early music perform on Thursday, February 21, at the Carolina Music Museum on Heritage Green in downtown Greenville at 7:30 PM.
Alison Crum is one of the best-known British exponents of the viol. As teacher, performer, and moving spirit behind several well-known early music groups, she has travelled all over the world giving recitals and lectures and teaching in summer schools and workshops. She has made well over one hundred recordings with some of Britain’s finest ensembles; and, as a soloist, on discs of Marais, Bach, and virtuoso Italian divisions, which is a passage or ‘step’ for a solo instrument or lead instrument. An antique term, but it is not surprising as Ms. Crum and Roy Marks are world renowned for playing antique music.
Alison is President of the Viola da Gamba Society of Great Britain, Professor of Viol at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London, and a visiting teacher at several colleges and universities in both Europe and the USA. She is also the author of two highly acclaimed books on playing the viol, and has been called the doyenne of British viol teachers.
Roy Marks, Alison’s husband, began his musical life in childhood playing the piano and, in his teens, playing lead guitar in a rhythm and blues band, rather than going on to study music however, he chose art—studies that culminated at the Royal Academy in London where he was awarded the prestigious David Murray scholarship for landscape painting. In his late thirties, Roy turned his attention almost exclusively to early music—to the recorder, the viol, and the lute.
Together, Alison and Roy are very much occupied with playing music from the 16th to the 18th century and they have collected a large number of copies of early instruments—all of which they play. As members of The Rose Consort of Viols they have recorded many CDs of English consort music, and as teachers they are popular on courses and workshops in the USA and in Europe. In more recent years they have grown increasingly fond of the earlier repertoire that audiences will hear at the concert on February 21st. What’s a Spagna? You’ll have to come to the concert to find out!
With only 80 seats available, we urge everyone to make their reservations early. $15 for adults, $5 for students with ID’s. Call 520-8807 to make your reservations. The concert will begin at 7:30.

Please join us as the Shoestring Players present the student directed production of BETRAYAL
Directed by Doug Yates
A sharp look into the nature of romantic relationships, Harold Pinter’s BETRAYAL starts in 1977 when long time lovers Jerry and Emma meet after her marriage to her husband Robert dissolves, and then backtracks all the way to 1968 when their affair first began. As the years spin backwards, a complex web of secrets about the trio emerges and calls into question the nature of their intimacy — as friends, as partners, as spouses. A play about love, lust, and time, Betrayal poetically explores the rift between memory and reality.

Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, comedian-turned-actor DeRay Davis can most recently be “scene” and heard in the blockbuster mega hit 21 Jump Street, Jumping the Broom, and his wildly successful Showtime 1 hour Comedy Special, DeRay Davis:Power Play. He lends his voice and writing talent to countless characters on Kanye West’s Albums, the BoonDocks and currently on Adult Swims Black Dynamite!
DeRay developed and honed a hip, sardonic, streetwise mentality at an early age and parlayed it smoothly and efficiently into the comedy-club circuit. Davis achieved his career breakthrough at the Laffapalooza Festival in Atlanta, GA, then scored a triple whammy by winning the Comedy Central Laugh Riots Competition and landing covetable spots in the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival and the Cedric the Entertainer Festival. Throughout, the comic wove vulgar and droll, yet also telling and deeply personal routines around the subjects of race, poverty, and his challenging experiences growing up in the Windy City projects with a dysfunctional African-American family.
The transition from behind-the-mike spots to movie roles represented a relatively short jump, for most of Davis’ early film assignments emphasized the same subject matter as his routines; for example, he played the “Hustle Guy” in Barbershop (2002) and its sequel, Barbershop 2: Back in Business (2004), rapper Mario “Fa Real” Greene in the Martin Short comedy Jiminy Glick in La La Wood (2004), and a Jamaican stoner in Johnson Family Vacation (2004). Davis expanded his genre focus with roles in Rupert Wainwright’s supernatural horror outing The Fog (2005), and Todd Phillips’ comedy remake School for Scoundrels (2006). Subsequent feature assignments include License to Wed (2007), Semi-Pro (2008, as basketball player Bee Bee Ellis), and Imagine That (2009). Life As We Know it and Old Dogs. Davis also appeared on television series including Entourage and Reno 911!, and televised comedy revues such as Comedy Central’s Premium Blend and was a Stand out MVP on Shaq’s All Star Comedy Jam Tour and is now making the rounds on the tour circuit preparing for his next 1 hour comedy special, Home, Street Home: The Hood Hero Returns.

Touring the nation for 10 years, Super Happy Funtime is a show that still cannot be explained.
Based out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, this 10 member ensemble performs a show that, for lack of a better term, is described as live band burlesque. But with the absence of jazz, of feather boas, of any of the trappings of glamour; Super Happy Funtime is a rock opera with a little added sex and sleaze.
Dedicated to the dirty, the ribald, and the surreal; this oddball show mixes dirty jokes and stunts and satire into a show of extremely contemporary and catchy rock music that is equal parts South Park, Rocky Horror, and Price is Right. Exploring
every corner of camp, of sleaze, and with a mix of seriously intelligent social commentary; it is guaranteed that
Super Happy Funtime will surprise every time.
2 sets, each about an hour long, and a 15 minute intermission.
Super Happy Funtime has been touring the nation for 10 years, feel free to go down the deep pit of videos, songs, and performances from its historic run at these links:
