Hit the trails and learn more about the Arboretum’s botanically diverse forest with the return of guided trail walks in 2021! In response to COVID-19, new safety measures have been put in place to protect our guests, members, volunteers and staff: Walks will be limited to 10 people, including the guide, and all participants will be required to wear face coverings for the duration of the walk.
This free hiking program is led by trained volunteer guides who take small groups of participants along woodland trails and through a variety of forest types. Depending on the season, topics of discussion may include wildflowers, plant and tree identification, natural history and more.
Guided trail walks depart from the Baker Exhibit Center Lobby every Tuesday and Saturday at 1 p.m. through the month of October. Walks last 1.5- 2.5 hours and are approximately one to two miles in length, and as such are recommended for guests 14 years or older. Walks are held rain or shine, so all participants should dress appropriately for the weather.
Register In Advance
Space is limited and advance registration is encouraged. Pre-registered participants must check in at the Baker Information Desk no later than 10 minutes before the scheduled program to keep their spot. Unclaimed spots will be offered to other guests.
Guests may sign up for trail walks in the following ways:
- Pre-register online
- Sign up in-person at the Baker Information Desk.

Backpacking Program
We will be hiking a 50-mile section of the Foothills Trail from Sloan Bridge (Highway 107) to Table Rock State Park. During the week scouts will be focused on LNT training principles, Map/Compass reading, and backpacking skills. This trip is physically tough so be sure to get in shape BEFORE the trip.
Shuttles
Parents are responsible for dropping off at designated put in and picking up at designated take out locations. The Council can only shuttle equipment to the put in and take out locations.
We encourage parents and guardians to monitor email and texting applications for the duration of floats and hikes for the journey updates.
Crew Size
We recommend groups of 6 to 14 per week. Small or “partial” crews can be paired with other small crews (sign up early!). Combined crews from multiple units are welcome.
Adult Leadership
Crews must have two adult leaders or pair with another crew to meet 2–deep leadership requirements. At least one must be 21, and one 18. All adults must have a BSA Youth Protection card. Co-ed crews need co-ed leadership. Adults pay the same trip fees as youth.
Requirements
We recommend that Scout participants on ANY High Adventure be at least 13 years old. The following are minimum requirements, which must be met in order to ensure a safe and fun experience:
Paperwork submission, physical forms, dietary restriction information – 30 days prior to trip date.
1. Swimming Ability: All participants must pass the swimmer’s test. The standard BSA Swimmer’s Test will be used to classify swimmers and determine those eligible to go on canoe trips.
2. Canoe Handling Ability: Canoe trippers do not have to be “experts” before starting out. They should know the fundamentals of launching, paddling positions and strokes, general safety rules about wind and weather, loading and care of canoes, and canoeing safety.
3. Safety Afloat: All users of Council canoes should be trained in safety afloat. Adults must bring current BSA Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat cards. The courses are offered by the BSA Online Learning Center.
