New Year’s Resolutions: Be a community blood donor
Jan 22 @ 7:00 am – 6:00 pm
The Blood Connection--Greenville

Right now, a team of doctors is scrubbing in for a surgery while a patient waits for a procedure that they hope will save their life; blood bags are prepared and ready.  In a different hospital, a team of nurses is giving a trauma victim a lifesaving blood transfusion.  Several floors away, a cancer patient is receiving a platelet transfusion after chemotherapy.  Those patients, and thousands of others, can hope and plan for the new year because blood products were available.

As we enter 2023, many are looking at a piece of paper, writing down their new year’s resolutions and goals: ‘read ten books…get outside more often…go to the gym.’ The Blood Connection (TBC), the non-profit community blood center, is encouraging people to add one more thing to that list: save a life with TBC. It may sound daunting.  It may sound unachievable.  But with just one hour and one blood donation, three lives can be saved in this community. The difference between a joyous and tragic new year for many local families is community blood donors.

TBC is urging community members to make blood donation a priority in 2023 – because, simply put: lives depend on it.

The Fairytale Ball is FULL of princess interactions- We Princess Promise your little one will have the opportunity to meet each and every Pretty Princess in attendance. To ensure everyone gets all the photos and hugs they need, the final 20 minutes of the ball are dedicated to “Love&Goodbyes” so no one feels like they need to rush out the door! Our event is created to please each and every guest, and we know you’ll go home with a smile on your face and love in your heart!

Tips for Success:

Once in a while, in all of the excitement, we need a parental figure to step in and help with a child. If you see that one of the guests is interfering with a game or preventing things from running smoothly, we ask that the parent or any other adult figure take care of the matter. Our princesses are not to be considered babysitters, or caretakers, in any way. You must stay for the duration of this event, and ensure your child is having a safe and comfortable experience. Our princesses want to give each and every child their “magical moment.” Please do not rush our performers to take photos faster, or speed up interactions. If you are disruptive of the Fairytale Ball event in any way, you may be asked to leave. No refunds will be given.

Pretty Princess Parties does not and will not offer any characters under copyright. Our fairytale characters have been based on stories that have been told throughout the centuries and, therefore, have been out of copyright and in the public domain. Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice
Jan 22 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Upstate History Museum

Dinosaurs will roar into the Upstate South Carolina, when the Upcountry History Museum presents Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice. Crossing the threshold of this interactive exhibition means traveling back in time to explore the Age of the Dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice is the first child-centered exhibit in the country dedicated to expanding the understanding of dinosaurs and their habitats. Designed for young explorers, ages 3-10, the bilingual (Spanish and English) exhibit features three distinct sections that build on a child’s innate curiosity about dinosaurs: Land of Fire (a warm dinosaur habitat), Land of Ice (a cold dinosaur habitat), and a Field Research Station (complete with a Big Dig experience).

The steamy Land of Fire, present day Montana, introduces visitors to the Triceratops, T-Rex and the dinosaurs who called this environment home. Children can circle the land in insect costumes, buzz through a volcano with oozing lava, work through a swampy bog and identify an ecosystem of animals and plants.

No coats are needed for a trip across the Land of Ice where visitors meet the dinosaurs who made their homes in the cold climate of Alaska. Activities include: climbing rocky steps, breezing down an icy slide, and hopping across stepping stones in an icy river.

In the hands-on Field Research Station children and their caregivers don goggles and research vests, as they uncover dinosaur bones in a dig station and examine fossils to identify dinosaurs.

The exhibit builds on the popular fascination with dinosaurs and includes science, history, and literacy based activities to challenge all ages. Sculpted, touchable dinosaurs, featuring the most recent scientific findings about dinosaur colors, textures and structural form create opportunities for young
explorers to investigate clues that the dinosaurs left behind.

Nutcracker: the Exhibition
Jan 22 @ 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Upstate History Museum

The nutcracker sits under the holiday tree, a guardian of childhood stories. Feed him walnuts and he will crack open a tale…

In the Christmas season of merry making, the ways of celebrating are as many and as varied as possible, but familiar traditions and stories connect all of us during this time, influencing our celebrations and holding a special place in our hearts. One such story and tradition is The Nutcracker.

Whether it’s a tradition to see the ballet or if you only know the songs from hearing them played on Christmas playlists, we are all familiar with the story of The Nutcracker. Or are we truly?

The Upcountry History Museum in partnership with Walt Disney Archives, The Walt Disney Family Museum, Charles M. Schulz Museum, artists James Ransome and Jan Brett, R. Michelson Galleries, and the Carolina Ballet Theatre will invite visitors to explore the history of the surprisingly dark story behind the ballet and its evolution into a holiday classic.

From its origins as a short story written by Prussian author, E.T.A. Hoffman in 1816, to its premiere as a fairy tale ballet in two acts that opened a week before Christmas in 1892, The Nutcracker has become the most popular ballet to be performed around the world at Christmas time.

Nutcracker: The Exhibition, a 1,200 square foot exhibition, organized by the Upcountry History Museum, will explore the kaleidoscope of artistic re-imaginings of The Nutcracker, from the 1820’s to the present. The immersive experience will take visitors on a journey from The Nutcracker’s beginnings as a short story, to its artistic interpretations in literature, ballet, theater, and film. Original illustrations, drawings, film and ballet costumes, props, and ephemera will examine multiple perspectives of one of literature’s greatest paradoxes that continues to inspire imagination, creativity, and discussion.

Rich with visual interpretation, the exhibition will take visitors on a journey through the cultural, technological, and societal shifts that have compelled artists, filmmakers, and fans to return to tale of The Nutcracker time and time again.

Art Exhibit: už linijos (beyond the line)
Jan 23 all-day
Woodbine Studio & Gallery

už linijos (beyond the line) is a conceptual installation by multimedia artistic team Jeff + Goda.

The exhibit features allegorical pointillism and three dimensional mixed media works that pull focus on the physical and emotional lines seen and felt in universal topics, such as temporality, stability, and a constant search of one’s identity.

Lines are an integral component for giving shape, form, and interpretation to stories and personal experiences. However, the core feelings and immediacy of living are often blurred, overlooked, or hidden; somewhere beyond those visible lines.

už linijos (beyond the line) strives to reflect, and bring awareness to, the rarity and significance of those imperceptible day to day moments.

EXHIBITION: Ostentatious Affliction
Jan 23 @ 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
Milliken Art Gallery

Ostentatious Affliction will feature the latest work from J.B. Burke in the Milliken Art Gallery. Burke’s drawings express the language of excess and consequence. “We interact with food intimately- we consume it, we digest it, and we internalize it in multiple senses. Food defines ordinary life and special occasions alike. It can create pleasure and provoke shame. It becomes a vehicle for stories that investigate the body, identity, gender, community, the domestic, the sacramental, economics, politics, and the environment. These drawings use the saccharine sweet colors of carnival cotton candy to underscore the implied threat,” states Burke.

Born in Wichita, Kansas, Jessica Burke (J.B.) is a figurative artist and educator that earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She is an Associate Professor of Art and Foundations Coordinator at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. As an artist working in both traditional and digital drawing media, she is interested in the effect of popular culture on identity. Her drawings have been published in highly selective contemporary art publications that include Manifest’s International Drawing Annual (INDA) 13 and in North Light Book’s Strokes of Genius 9: The Best of Drawing. She will also have work published in the 2nd Edition of the textbook, Art for Everyone by University Press in January 2022.

Ostentatious Affliction will run from January 5-26, 2023.

Burke will present a Gallery Talk on January 26th at 6:00 pm in the gallery, followed by a reception from 6:30-8:00 pm.
