Born 1976, Belinda Davids started life in the small coastal town of Port Elizabeth in South Africa, where her musical family of seven children spent much of its time in church, singing and surrounded by gospel music. Enduring youth as a ‘coloured’ girl in a difficult, apartheid-ridden South Africa, Belinda found solace and empowerment in music – it was an equalizer, of sorts, for someone so devoid of equality in her life and surroundings, an expression and a pastime that needed no resources, no special education, no permissions, just her own God-given voice.
Her talent was glaringly apparent from an early age. Still to this day she has never had vocal training and is blessed with a 4-octave vocal range, putting her in the company of such vocal luminaries as Minnie Riperton, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Freddie Mercury. She began performing professionally at just 14 years of age and became technically adept at many genres but her true love has always been R&B; her childhood inspirations included Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, Donny Hathaway, Michael Jackson and of course the one artist who has had the biggest impact on her life – Whitney Houston.
In the Wood… From the Earth |
Six new 2024 members of the Artists Collective | Spartanburg will participate in the “New Member Exhibit: In the Woods … From the Earth” Jan. 7 through Feb. 1, 2025, in ACS’s Gallery II and Gallery III. An artists’ reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, as part of Spartanburg ArtWalk. The reception and exhibition viewing are free and open to the public. The artwork in the show will be offered for purchase. “The Artists Collective | Spartanburg is a welcoming and collaborative environment that inspires creativity for its members and visitors alike,” says Cassandra Stephens-Johnson, who is coordinating the exhibit. “We look forward to visitors seeing the beautiful and varied works by these talented new ACS members.” The participating artists will be Darryl Jones, Garry Turpin, Tipton Jones-Boiter, Mariam Tucker-Jones, Karina Manukyan and Christine Blackburn |
Spartanburg artist Robert Urban’s latest mixed media works use trees “as a metaphor for family and the relationships we all hold dear within the family circle and beyond.” The contemporary landscapes will be shown in the “Push & Pull: New Work” exhibit Jan. 7 through Feb. 22, 2025, in the Solomon Gallery of the Artists Collective | Spartanburg.
An artist’s reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, as part of Spartanburg ArtWalk. The reception and exhibition viewing are free and open to the public. The 30-plus pieces in the show will be offered for purchase with prices ranging from $150 to $5,000.
“Nature, and specifically trees, are used as metaphors to represent the passage of time, within nature itself, of course, but also within our human relationships – our family, friends and communities,” says Urban, originally from Wisconsin. “The exhibition title refers to the many different forces and ways that we experience either a ‘push’ or a ‘pull’ – our interactions within nature, relationships and our communities.”

The genus of plants known as Oak (Quercus sp.) is at least as important to civilization as any food crop you can think of, maybe even more so. This class combines history and plant science to explore the history that oak trees and humans share from the end of the last ice age to the present.
Join us as Henderson County Extension Agent Steve Pettis will discuss acorns as a food source throughout history, the age of sail, ancient and modern industries based on oak, the oaks of western NC and much more.
