City of Greenville Celebrates Two Affordable Housing Milestones

The City of Greenville recently celebrated two major wins in affordable housing.

The first was the dedication of “Ginny’s House.” Genesis Homes dedicated the home in honor of former City of Greenville Community Development Administrator Ginny Stroud. During her tenure, more than 1,000 affordable homes were created in Greenville.

“I cannot think of a better gift to recognize my service to the citizens of Greenville than an affordable home to be built in my honor,” said Stroud. “I believe affordable housing forms the foundations needed for families to thrive and for children to succeed.”

The home in the Greenline-Spartanburg neighborhood will provide a stable living environment for a mother and her son. “These resources have catapulted me to a higher level than I thought I would be,” said Roslyn Porter, who will live in the 2-bedroom, one-bath home. “I’m excited about where I’m going.

Greenville saw another win for affordable housing with the approval by the Design Review Board of an eight-story addition adjacent to the historic Greenville Summit.

Like their neighbors in the original building, seniors in the new addition will pay 30% of their income as rent, averaging $338 a month. Construction is expected to begin in September of 2024, with 50 units available in 2025.

The project, from Summit owners JE Properties, will be built on the existing site, in the parking lot adjacent to 201 W. Washington Street. The buildings will be connected via a new single-story hallway and courtyard.

It is part of the City of Greenville’s mission to make livability a priority, a vision supported by both the GVL2040 Comprehensive Plan and by the Greenville City Council.
