Astron General Contracting, the company that cleaned and painted the Liberty Bridge last summer, has returned to complete some final work on the bridge deck. As a result, the Liberty Bridge is closed until 6:00 am on Friday, May 24.
Crews will sand, pressure wash, and prime the deck before applying an epoxy resin with aggregate mixed in for skid resistance and traction. Once the final coat is applied, the deck will be allowed to cure for at least 16 hours.
The city conducts biennial inspections of the bridge and the next inspection will take place in 2020; however, due to the extensive preventative maintenance performed over the past year, maintenance needs are expected to be minimal for the next three to five years.
Greenville’s unique Liberty Bridge honors Liberty Corporation founder W. Frank Hipp and his children, Francis M. Hipp, Herman N. Hipp, B. Calhoun Hipp, and Dorothy Hipp Gunter for their commitment and contribution to the Greenville community.
